Sha-Chi explained

Sha-Chi fuels offense and defense. Blocking drains it; an empty meter leaves you open. Swap primary weapons with D-Pad Left to refill, and use Blue-flash parries and Red-flash dodges to manage pressure. Compare difficulty modifiers below. Sha-Chi Essence is a separate resource: Power Surge costs one, Zero State three (allthings.how).

Guard Stance drain (Attributed — relative, not absolute integers)

Status: Attributed, updated 29 October 2026. Tooltips:

  • “Guard Stance continuously drains Sha-Chi.”
  • “Blocking attacks drains additional Sha-Chi.”

Difficulty multipliers for enemy damage to your Sha-Chi while blocking (relative multipliers — not absolute meter drain integers):

Difficulty Enemy damage → your Sha-Chi (while blocking) Guard-break stagger after empty meter
WAYFARER ×0.33 2 seconds
PATHBREAKER ×0.66 3 seconds
HELLWALKER Full 3 seconds
66 DAYS Full 3 seconds

What is Sha-Chi?

In Phantom Blade Zero’s KungfuPunk combat loop, Sha-Chi sits under nearly every meaningful choice: blocking, heavy commits, and skill-like Edges all pull from the same pool. Think of it as shared posture-and-fuel rather than a simple stamina bar. Official store copy emphasizes fluid dodge / deflect / counter / strike; Sha-Chi is the meter that makes those choices costly when mismanaged.

Blocking, empty pool, and opponent Sha-Chi (official)

Per PlayStation Blog (28 October 2026):

  • Blocking attacks depletes your Sha-Chi.
  • If Sha-Chi runs out, you can be staggered and left open to attack (official).
  • Perfectly parrying, dodging, and landing blows knock down your opponent’s Sha-Chi instead, letting you cut through their defenses.

Block / combo / enemy drain integers for the main Sha-Chi meter remain Unverified—no official PS Blog, Steam, or S-GAME page publishes those numbers. In-game tooltip documented by allthings.how: “Sha-Chi Combos consume Sha-Chi” (qualitative only—no integer). Separately, Essence spend for Power Surge / Zero State and full restore on swap are attributed below. We refuse unofficial “patch history” inventions (e.g. nkbgaming “85% base pool + Chi-Attunement” style claims) as official—those lack Steam / S-GAME citations.

These values describe relative multipliers and stagger durations. Absolute block, combo, and enemy drain numbers remain Unverified. Soft Snake’s no-cost Guard Stance applies specifically to that weapon. Dread Axe’s Rapid Charge increases charge speed by 30%; Sha-Chi Amber Shards increase maximum Sha-Chi by 10%. These are separate effects. PATHBREAKER is attributed UI vocabulary from allthings.how.

HP context (Attributed — allthings.how difficulty modes): ordinary-enemy health is ×0.8 on WAYFARER and PATHBREAKER (20% less); elites and bosses keep the same HP on all modes—boss HP unchanged by difficulty. Do not invent other absolute meter integers from this note.

Sha-Chi Amber Shards (+10% max — relative max-pool, not base drain)

allthings.how quotes the item card: “Collect all four fragments to increase maximum Sha-Chi by 10%.” This increases maximum capacity. The Sha-Chi Amber Shards guide does not establish the base meter’s drain rate, which remains Unverified.

Accessory Sha-Chi drain-rate modifiers (Attributed — not base absolute integers)

Brass Chest Guard reduces Guard Stance drain rate; its percentages describe an accessory modifier (allthings.how accessories list). Soft Snake’s Guard Stance perk and Amber Shards’ capacity increase are separate effects. Absolute base drain numbers remain Unverified.

  • Brass Chest Guard — “Reduces Sha-Chi drain rate by 30% while holding [Block] to maintain Guard Stance.” Refined: 60% (11,040 Remnant Dust); further 90% (16,560 Remnant Dust). Location: Crimson Forest (closest bell: Lakeside Arch Bridge), in a chest.
  • Optional: Baishan Writ — “Increases Sha-Chi depletion against enemies by 5%” / refined 10% (35,200 Remnant Dust).

Secondary qualitative (GamesRadar tips — hands-on, not absolute integers): some boss attacks can instantly drain all your Sha-Chi; the telegraph is the screen briefly turning black and white (not a blue/red flash)—dodge. Cite GamesRadar; keep as secondary press.

Does weapon swapping refill Sha-Chi?

Yes — official wording + attributed full restore. PS Blog Oct 28: press D-Pad Left to swap between your two equipped main weapons and quickly refill Sha-Chi. The system pushes you to string attacks from both weapons or swap as you end strikes so you are ready to parry. Forbes (9 October 2026) is secondary corroboration for swap restore.

Full bar on swap: Attributed. Tutorial bubble: “Switching weapons fully restores Sha-Chi” (allthings.how switch-weapons / Sha-Chi docs, updated 29 October 2026). Keep PS Blog’s “quickly refill” phrasing alongside this attributed full-restore note. Tutorial also states switching weapons has a short cooldown—base seconds remain Unverified. Whether Edge swaps behave the same way remains Unverified. Block / combo / enemy drain integers stay Unverified.

Perfect-parry window frames (timing — not meter costs)

Status: Attributed. These are perfect-parry timing windows by difficulty, not Sha-Chi meter drain or refill costs—do not confuse frames with meter integers.

  • WAYFARER — 10 frames
  • PATHBREAKER — 8 frames
  • HELLWALKER — 8 frames
  • 66 DAYS — 6 frames

Confirm in your patch. PATHBREAKER is listed in the allthings.how parry guide alongside the three PS Blog difficulty names (Wayfarer / Hellwalker / Sixty-Six Days)—treat PATHBREAKER as attributed UI vocabulary from that source, not a first-party PS Blog difficulty name.

Power Surge & Zero State (Sha-Chi Essence)

Official (PS Blog Oct 28): as you land attacks you earn Sha-Chi Essence. When fully charged, unleash a Power Surge with L2 that overpowers the opponent, interrupts attacks, and deals massive damage. Essence is a separate purple pip—not the main Sha-Chi bar. allthings.how (updated 29 October 2026) documents PC prompts: build Essence via parries + Sha-Chi Attacks (F); fire Power Surge on Q. Keep PS Blog L2 as the console / official wording—both are listed here; do not silently pick one.

allthings.how documents in-game prompts: “Power Surges consume one Sha-Chi Essence” and “Consume 3 Sha-Chi Essence and press Zero to enter Zero State!” These costs apply to Essence, the separate purple pip. The base meter’s numeric drain remains Unverified.

  • Tooltip: “Power Surges consume one Sha-Chi Essence” → Power Surge cost = 1 Essence.
  • Prompt: “Consume 3 Sha-Chi Essence and press Zero to enter Zero State!” → Zero State cost = 3 Essence.

Power Surge / Zero State damage numbers and main-meter integers remain Unverified.

Soft Snake Sword (灵蛇软剑) — Sha-Chi practice blade

Soft Snake Sword (灵蛇软剑) is a defensive-counter primary. Defeat Wu Lengshuang, the Soft Sword, in Mandate Encampment near the Path of the Baishan’s Fall bell (GameSpot / KeenGamer / allthings.how weapons list, updated Oct 29 2026). The Mandate Encampment map also identifies the weapon and boss.

GameSpot and allthings.how attribute a no-cost Guard Stance perk to Soft Snake Sword. The community Fextralife page describes Serpentine Flow / Inner Stillness; treat these as weapon-specific effects. Bloodless Victory calls for deflecting an attack with Serpentine Reversal (allthings.how achievements). Compare obtain paths on the weapons table.

Blue-flash / Red-flash / Ghoststep (tutorial-attributed)

Prefer teaching the prologue flash vocabulary documented by secondary how-tos (allthings.how “How to Parry” / Guard Stance / dodge / shield tutorial, checked 2026-10-29). Prefer spelling Ghoststep for the tutorial-attributed lead (鬼步 gloss OK). Prologue sparring with Zuo Shang surfaces Blue / Red as on-screen tasks:

  • Blue-flash → Parry (PC: Right Mouse / Stance). Perfect Block at impact → Ghoststep (鬼步).
  • Red-flash → cannot block; Dodge (PC: Left Shift). Perfect Dodge at impact → Ghoststep.

allthings.how’s dodge guide documents these in-game tips for Blue-flash, Red-flash, and Ghoststep:

  • Loading tip: “Parry blue and dodge red. Keep this in mind and you’ll go far.”
  • Perfect Block → Ghoststep: “tapping Deflect at the exact moment of impact to Perfect Block will trigger a Ghoststep, instantly slipping behind your foe!”
  • Red-flash prompt: “try pressing Dash to counterattack!”
  • Ability Training mentions counters “on ranged Red-flash attacks”.

The Red Thread Barrier guide quotes: “Parry Blue-flash Attacks to trigger Ghoststep and move behind enemies.” Attributed. Confirm button prompts in your patch.

Brutal Moves / Killer Moves / Ghostep (press — EN UI Unverified)

Use Blue-flash, Red-flash, and Ghoststep for the tutorial vocabulary documented by allthings.how. Famitsu’s Japanese coverage uses 青攻撃 / 赤攻撃 / 幽歩. IGN’s preview uses Brutal Moves, Killer Moves, and Ghostep; those English labels remain Unverified as retail UI terms.

IGN, AFK Times, and Wccftech use the preview labels Brutal Moves, Killer Moves, and Ghostep. Their reporting provides combat context; confirmation of those exact labels in the retail English UI remains Unverified. Ghoststep is attributed to tutorial quotes documented by allthings.how.

  1. Watch the meter during early Hunt fights

In The Hunt (official name, PS Blog ZH) and early gated duels, note which defenses and heavies drain Sha-Chi in your patch—write it down before trusting any guide cell. Remember: empty pool can stagger you (official).

  2. Drill D-Pad Left swaps as refill practice

Intentionally swap mid-combo when the meter is mid-low and observe the refill (PS Blog “quickly refill”; attributed full restore via allthings.how tutorial). Note the short switch cooldown if present. Separate this drill from parry-only tests so you do not mix unverified drain integers.

  3. Charge Essence, then test Power Surge (L2 / Q)

Land blows / parries to fill Sha-Chi Essence, then fire Power Surge once (PS Blog L2; PC Q per allthings.how). Expect 1 Essence per Surge and 3 for Zero State (Attributed — in-game UI quotes). Log interrupt windows; leave damage unlabeled until you reproduce it.

  4. Update weapons table Sha-Chi notes when confirmed

Feed verified notes into the weapons table; leave the rest as Unverified. Pair with worked examples for role-language practice.
