Beginner guide

How do I start Phantom Blade Zero? Follow these launch-week steps—learn tells, lock a 2+2 loadout, practice Sha-Chi swaps, clear The Hunt carefully, choose a difficulty, reforge when you respec, and compare your drops.

First hours route

Attributed obtain paths; use this as a pickup checklist as areas open. Compare the early weapons table for outlet picks and sources.

  1. Check the rack beside the Outpost Forge for Sanguine Reach (ATH / Destructoid).
  2. Check the rack along the path after meeting Yu’er for Sanguine Twin (GameRant / Destructoid).
  3. Defeat Jagged Steel, the Frenzied Brute, for Jagged Steel (ATH / Destructoid).
  4. Optionally defeat Hua, Deadly Betrothed, for Scarlet Wraithblade (ATH / Destructoid).
  5. Defeat Peng Meng, the Axemaster, for Dread Axe (ATH).
  6. Follow The Hunt path for Hunter’s Chain Sickle; ATH places it at the second fight, Great Waterfall.
  7. Practice D-Pad Left primary swaps to quickly refill Sha-Chi (PlayStation Blog).
  1. Learn parry vs dodge color tells

Prefer Blue-flash → Parry (Perfect Block → Ghoststep 鬼步) and Red-flash → Dodge (Perfect Dodge → Ghoststep), taught in prologue sparring with Zuo Shang (Attributed — allthings.how). Loading tip (ATH dodge): “Parry blue and dodge red. Keep this in mind and you’ll go far.” Drill five intentional Blue-flash parries and five Red-flash dodges. Secondary (GamesRadar): some boss attacks instantly drain all Sha-Chi—telegraph is a brief black-and-white screen (not blue/red flash); dodge. IGN preview brands Brutal Moves / Killer Moves / Ghostep—keep those Unverified as official EN UI. Do not import Stellar Blade habits by name.

  2. Equip two primary blades + two Phantom Edge slots

Press coverage (Forbes / Forge) describes a 2+2 loadout: dual primary weapons and dual Phantom Edge slots. Start with a one-handed primary for readable strings, leave Edge slots empty or lightly filled until a boss drop is verified (Hunter's Chain Sickle from The Hunt is attributed via Epic Store guide), then add a reach- or ranged-family Edge for spacing. Confirm slot UI unlock timing in your patch.

  3. Practice weapon swap to refill Sha-Chi

Sha-Chi is a shared resource for offense, defense, and skills. PlayStation Blog (28 October 2026): blocking depletes Sha-Chi; if it runs out you can be staggered and left open; D-Pad Left weapon swap quickly refills Sha-Chi; Sha-Chi Essence fuels Power Surge with L2. Full restore on swap is Attributed (in-game tutorial via allthings.how). Guard Stance continuously drains Sha-Chi and blocking drains additional (Attributed — ATH tooltips); difficulty block-drain multipliers WAYFARER ×0.33 / PATHBREAKER ×0.66 / HELLWALKER & 66 DAYS Full are relative—not absolute integers. Attributed Essence costs: Power Surge 1; Zero State 3. Absolute meter drain integers remain Unverified; abort greedy strings when the pool is nearly empty.

  4. Clear The Hunt / early bosses carefully

The Hunt is an official EN name (PS Blog ZH, 2026-08-12). Press describes a former comrade of Soul fought atop a runaway cart—cart detail remains press-attributed; move list Unverified. Epic Store guide attributes Hunter's Chain Sickle to defeating The Hunt. Push early gated foes patiently: log tells, watch for Phantom Edge drops, and check the bosses table for attributed mechanics and drops.

  5. Pick a difficulty and reforge when respeccing

PlayStation Blog (2026-08-17) lists difficulty modes Wayfarer, Hellwalker, and Sixty-Six Days. When you need a role change (one-handed pressure ↔ dual-tempo ↔ Edge-heavy), use reforge—PS Blog states upgrade materials return. Still verify the menu path in your patch, then follow the dedicated reforge HowTo.

  6. Compare your drops after each session

After a play session, compare your new drops with the weapons and Phantom Edges tables. Follow obtain notes when choosing the next encounter, and use the boss links to check mechanics. Unverified entries indicate details that still need confirmation in your patch.

Difficulty modes (official)

PlayStation Blog’s State of Play deep dive (17 August 2026) names three modes: Wayfarer, Hellwalker, and Sixty-Six Days. Start on Wayfarer while learning tells and Sha-Chi swaps; step up once your 2+2 loadout feels automatic.

Sha-Chi caution (official, Oct 28)

Blocking drains Sha-Chi; an empty pool can stagger you and leave you open (PS Blog Oct 28). Refill with D-Pad Left primary swaps (“quickly refill”); full restore on swap is Attributed. Guard Stance continuously drains Sha-Chi and blocking drains additional (Attributed — ATH tooltips). Difficulty multipliers for enemy damage to your Sha-Chi while blocking: WAYFARER ×0.33 · PATHBREAKER ×0.66 · HELLWALKER / 66 DAYS Full—relative multipliers, not absolute integers. Charge Sha-Chi Essence (separate purple pip) for Power Surge (L2 / PC Q). Attributed Essence costs: Power Surge 1; Zero State 3. Absolute meter drain integers stay Unverified. Loading tip (Attributed): “Parry blue and dodge red. Keep this in mind and you’ll go far.” Secondary (GamesRadar tips): some boss attacks can instantly drain all your Sha-Chi; telegraph is the screen briefly turning black and white (not blue/red flash)—dodge. See Sha-Chi explained for Blue-flash / Red-flash / Ghoststep quotes, Brass Chest Guard accessory drain-rate %, Sha-Chi Amber Shards +10% max (relative max-pool, not base drain), and the full Guard Stance table.

Death, Bells & early Ability

Attributed. On PATHBREAKER and other normal modes: a black DEAD screen, then respawn with full HP and refilled Medicine; Remnant Dust is not lost; defeated nearby enemies can reappear; boss HP is restored. Ability Training node quote: “Retain Sha-Chi Essence upon death.” First Chapter 1 bell name: The Beginning.

66 Days (ATH): unlocked after completing the game on any other difficulty; same combat difficulty as Hellwalker; deaths limited to 66; each death costs one day and assigns a Buff Level. We do not invent Buff Level effect numbers or day math beyond those ATH quotes.

Attributed: Boundless Capacity is the second Ability in the top row; costs 10,000 Remnant Dust; unlocks a third accessory slot. Same tip set also corroborates switching weapons in combat to keep Sha-Chi, and pairing Dread Axe with Shieldbreaker Talisman vs shields (qualitative—already Attributed Edge). Cite clearly as secondary press, not first-party UI dumps.

Practice Blue-flash parries, Red-flash dodges, and Ghoststep using the prologue tutorial documented by allthings.how. IGN’s preview labels Brutal Moves, Killer Moves, and Ghostep remain Unverified as retail English UI terms.

Soft Snake Sword drops from Wu Lengshuang, the Soft Sword, in Mandate Encampment near the Path of the Baishan’s Fall bell (GameSpot / KeenGamer / allthings.how weapons list, updated Oct 29 2026). The Bloodless Victory achievement calls for a deflection with its Serpentine Reversal art. Its Guard Stance perk applies specifically to this sword; the base meter’s numeric drain remains Unverified.

Four Sha-Chi Amber Shards increase maximum Sha-Chi by 10% (allthings.how). This increases capacity. Soul’s 850 HP baseline is player-health context from the Jagged Steel guide. Read Sha-Chi explained for the full resource and accessory notes.
